For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, And in a multitude of counselors there is safety. – Proverbs 24:6

The Bible speaks of the importance of wise counsel, such as here in Proverbs 24:6. We need others that we can share with and get their input on a situation. Wise counsel helps us to see things we may not be able to see in the moment or even help us get to the root of what is going on and how to respond.

Notice I use the word wise when it comes to seeking counsel. When choosing who to talk with we must be careful that they desire to seek the Lord in their own lives and will seek Him in the counsel they provided. So choose your counsel carefully, don’t run to anyone who will listen to us and get their feedback. We need solid, spiritually mature, scripturally grounded counsel, especially during the storms of our lives. I’ve found that some of the best counsel I’ve ever received came from those who listen more than they spoke, when they spoke, their words meant something, and those who have been through a similar situation, who can offer encouragement from their own experience.

Of course, the greatest counsel we have is the Holy Spirit. He will help us to discern the counsel we receive from others. Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” As we seek counsel, we need to verify that it is in line with God’s Word and God’s will for our lives. The Holy Spirit will give us peace about the counsel we receive if it is the right thing to do.

Do you have a network of wise counsel you can turn to when needed? If not, pray and ask the Lord to give you people in your life that you can trust for wise counsel.
